New Extension Sub-Committee from the Invasive Species Collaborative
Updated: Oct 3, 2025

We are excited to announce the launch of a new Extension Subcommittee under the Invasive Species Collaborative. As a first step, we envision that this subcommittee can focus on identifying and filling critical gaps in Virginia’s publicly available invasive species resources.
What is this subcommittee about? Our goal is to improve access to high-quality, research-informed extension materials—such as factsheets, management guides, and ID sheets—covering high-priority invasive species identified by state agencies, recent legislation, and local stakeholders. Additionally, we aim to explore new outreach and education opportunities that support practitioners, landowners, educators, and the public more generally.
Who can participate? We welcome:
Undergraduate and graduate students interested in science communication and invasive species management
Faculty and extension specialists who can mentor students or contribute expertise
Partner organizations interested in supporting the review process or co-developing materials
Note: We highly encourage participants to become affiliated with the ISC if they are not already, but please don’t let a lack of initial membership get in the way of your participation!
What will we do?
Conduct a gap analysis of current factsheets and management resources
Coordinate student-led drafting of new or revised factsheets
Establish an internal review process to ensure high quality and consistency
Provide training opportunities on science communication and outreach
Next steps:
Our first meeting will be held before the end of September
At this meeting, each participant (or small group) will select a factsheet they’d like to draft or update.
We’ll also identify timelines for drafting, mentor feedback, internal review, and submission.
